Petone Sand Plant

Wellington Quarry Sand Plant

Established in the 1920s, Winstone Aggregates purchased the site in 1988, from Firth who had owned it since 1980 and was the location for Wellington Paranormal.

Located by the Hutt River mouth, the Petone Sand Plant not only supplies the building industry with sand and shingle, it also does the important work of flood management. It is crucial that the river mouth be kept free of excessive sedimentation so that a sand bar does not form as this would increase the risk of flooding in the lower part of the Hutt Valley.

The sand is dredged from the bed of the Hutt River mouth by a mobile hydraulic excavator mounted on a barge and placed in position by tug. The excavator digs the river bed level to a maximum depth of 4.25 metres below the water level. When the barge has a full load (about 60 cubic metres) it is pushed to the shore and the sediment is unloaded for processing. After this the product is distributed for supply primarily to Belmont Quarry.
